Ms. Remy

Dear Sierra Vista Families,
I am looking forward to my fourth year as the Elementary and 6th and 7th grade PE teacher.  Sierra Vista is a very special community and I am humbled and honored to be a part of it.
A little about me:  I am originally from the East Coast, mostly Philadelphia, but I've also lived in Haiti, Key West, FL, and West Africa.  I’ve been a baker, street performer, worked a desk job in a  bank and even played private eye for a year.  My journey to becoming a teacher of Physical Education has been a little unconventional.  In 2001 and 2002 I did an intensive movement based expressive arts program at Tamalpa Institute, where I studied with dance pioneer Anna Halprin. It was there that I learned that the body has its own wisdom, and that when we trust in it, we can live fuller, richer, and more sensible lives.  I’ve always wanted to work with children (I also believe deeply in the power of play, and encourage it at every age) so when  I began subbing for PE while a stay-at-home mom, I eventually was hired full-time when my daughter turned 11, then finally earned my Single Subject Teaching Credential in 2014.
Last year Mr. Apostolos and I were fortunate to attend the California Physical Education, Dance and Recreation Conference in Santa Clara.  There we were able to attend over 20 different workshops across many disciplines.  We took classes in Tinikling (a Filipino folkdance) and African-based movement, soccer, mindfulness, Special Education and team building – we explored it all in two and a half days of vigorous learning.  Teachers love to learn, but as we learn new things, we must be open to change; it’s the only way we grow.  I look forward to all the change that is happening next year, and am excited to start the school year.  This year I am hoping to improve student learning by adding more rubric-based assessments, and increasing choice-based activities.  As always, I’m committed to stretching minds as well as bodies; I’m always looking for new games from every part of the world, so please reach out if you have skills, especially in the area of dance. I’d love to have parent-teachers grace our gym floors.
Here’s to another great year!
Ms. Remy
