MEET MS. REMY

Dear Sierra Vista Families,

First of all, a huge thank you for the exceptionally warm welcome from the families who will be returning this year – I was blown away by the generosity and kindness that seems to be the communal characteristic here at Sierra Vista.  To the new families who will are just joining us, you will be in great company.  This is a very special place and I am honored to be a part of it and to continue learning and growing along with our scholars.  It’s been awesome working alongside Mr. Apostolos and I look forward to collaborating again this year.

A little about me:  I am originally from the East Coast, mostly Philadelphia, but I've also lived in Haiti, Key West, FL, and West Africa.  Becoming a PE teacher was not something I ever dreamed of doing as a child; in fact, I can't even remember PE (we called it 'gym' back then).  As a child, half the time I had my head buried in a book, and half the time I was out playing with friends.

I became a PE teacher because I was inspired by my daughter (let's just say I became a "gym mom", and things escalated from there) who was a competitive gymnast. After teaching gymnastics at my daughter's gym, I was invited to teach PE at my daughter's school. Several years later I earned my credential at Patten University while teaching in Oakland. Though my daughter's path led me here, I stayed on the course because I came to love and have the greatest respect for the subject and those who teach it.  I firmly believe that Physical Education is for everybody - not just the athletes or athletes to be, but for every student that wants to succeed, and succeed happily, in this complex and changing world we live in.

This year I’d like to continue with a focus on sporting behavior, skill-building and teamwork at both the elementary and middle school level.  I am excited to introduce last year’s 5th graders to the world of middle school PE, and kindergartners to Physical Education “SV style”.

 With gratitude,

Michelle Remy
