MEET MRS. BARNES
Hello Sierra Vista Community,
My name is Rachel Barnes. I am thrilled to be returning to Sierra Vista as the ELD teacher. The students are eager to learn and I am looking forward to working with them again.
I have worked with EL students from PreK through grade 12 and as an ESL teacher at Vacaville adult school. In addition to being an EL teacher; I was a General Ed and Special Ed teacher as well. Besides teaching I’ve worked as a Middle school and High School counselor.
My husband and I have lived in Vacaville over 28 years and our three grown children attended and graduated from VUSD schools. I’m originally from Maine and attended college and grad school at Assumption University in Massachusetts. I grew up in a bilingual environment. My parents were bilingual (French/English) and my grandparents were non English speakers. Even though I am not bilingual, I enjoyed growing up in a rich culture where two languages flowed. Encouraging Sierra Vista ELD students to embrace and take pride in their two cultures is a privilege for me. I will inform and encourage 8th graders to learn about the State Seal of Biliteracy once they enter high school. I am looking forward to working the EL community another year; and helping Sierra Vista ELD students improve English and work toward the goal of reclassification.
Let’s have a great 2022-23 school year!
Mrs. Barnes
